Workspace Management: Supporting Cooperative Work
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper introduces a mechanism coping with cooperative work in developing and maintaning software artifacts in a multi-user engineering environment. For the long time it has been a problem to handle parallel activities on shared or interdependent products. The required mechanism must be sufficiently flexible to support concurrent updates so that none of new updates will be lost, nor lots of work will be rejected and restarted. This problem may be resolved by providing a sophisticated way for cooperating between consistent set of objects (workspaces). This mechanism has been prototyped in the EPOS1. EPOS offers integrated software configuration management (CM) and process management. The EPOS process modelling (PM) support system runs on top of the versioned EPOS database (EPOSDB), operating in client-server mode.

Team members usually cooperate on a business process by partitioning it into several activities, which in turn generate one or more work items. Work items either need to be processed separately or jointlydependent on the overall context. In addition, joint redefinition of the activity breakdown structure can be necessary while executing activities. Thus, two types of supportflexible workflows...

Complex database applications like CAD/CAM or CASE introduce the need for long duration and/or cooperative transactions. Unfortunately, commercial DBMSs generally support a flat transaction model without cooperation. While many studies have been conducted on the management of more powerful transaction models on top of existing DBMSs (e.g., workflow management), few attention has been paid on tr...
